...In his waning days as a director I'd sell artwork for Otto Preminger (1906 - 1986). He had one of the best twentieth century art collections which I got to examine and sell. But I think what I really learned from him was what it was like to have commitment for an idea. This guy, right up until the end, was zealous when it came to making films, and continued to have the energy needed to pursue his ideas, to the very end.

I've been a soundman, an editor, a cameraman. I really built myself from the ground up as a filmmaker. There's hardly a job on a movie that I haven't done at one point; a grip, a driver, a location scout, an AD, a focus puller. I figure, that way, as a producer, it'd be pretty hard to pull the wool over my eyes.

Training Day (2001): I'll never look at South Central the same way again. What I learned from the experience was that its all about respect! We hired the gangs to be our security guards, and to pay out the neighborhood location site rental fees. At wrap, one of the gang-bangers came to me at the end of the shoot and said: 'Thank you for filming here'. I thought it was a polite conversation, but he said: 'No! You don't understand. This is the first time we've been looked at as being anything more than a bunch of thieves. You gave us our respect back'.

We've talked about how long credit rolls are now and nothing has expanded more than the credit roll of producers. And that's the reality of producing now. Producers are brokers, producers are agents, producers are managers, and they're dealmakers. I get my enjoyment by helping to create the machine that makes the movie.
